We typically think of abortion having an effect only on women. This, however, is far from true. While the damage to women may be different than to men, Post Abortion Syndrome affects both men and women profoundly, because the loss is not only to the women involved, but also to the men. Some symptoms of PAS in men may include:
Sorrow, Depression, Anger,Guilt, Nightmares, Anxiety, Feelings of Rejection and Betrayal, Relational instability, Loss of trust in others
Physical effects may include (these often occur a few years after the abortion:
Ulcers, Migraines, High blood pressure
The abortion is typically very destructive to the relationship between the man and woman involved in the abortion; according to one study, 70% of the relationships failed within one month of the abortion.
Men typically feel a responsibility to protect and provide for their families. Because the act of abortion goes in contrast to this innate desire, many men feel torn apart, including those who encouraged the abortion. Their role as men has been stripped away by the act of abortion, and they may no longer know what to do.
Like women, men also need to find forgiveness and healing from abortion. Their needs, although different, are very great. Like a woman who grieves for her lost children, men also need to mourn the child or children they have lost, and to receive healing so that they may continue and function in a knowledge of acceptance and forgiveness.
Project Rachel reaches not only women, but also men. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30 Through a program of confidential counseling and prayer, men may receive the restoration and healing they need in order to recover from the wounds of abortion.
